I just made an exciting find. Another TV body validation for Dobbstown. I was watching TV last night and happened to see an episode of Futurama for the first time (the Season 2, Episode 6 show entitled, "Brannigan, Begin Again", http://goo.gl/4bi7s, alternate links - http://goo.gl/6kM3n). The episode is about the inauguration of the new D.O.O.P. (Democratic Order of Planets - http://goo.gl/aUQ8Y) headquarters, which is in orbit around the Neutral Planet. The doop group actually one-upped Bob by making their logo an ambigram, appearing the same upside down as it does right-side-up. The title seems a variation on this, as well. Actually, seems a fitting analogy for the group here in a phatic sort of way. What also struck me about DOOP is that the president of the neutral planet, referred to as "his neutralness", doesn't have an opinion either way (or a "dog in the fight"). haha His neutralness (http://goo.gl/rK8X9) is a great representation of iON. Here (below) is a video of his neutralness expressing his opinion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ussCHoQttyQ I also liked, "If I don't survive, tell my wife I said 'Hello'". So, who is the Bob character, you might ask? It's a toss up. I first considered the eponymous and thoroughly pantless, Zapp Brannigan. I thought it was funny (in this episode) that Brannigan, not wanting to be bothered to return to the ship where inauguration ceremony was being held, decided to try to cut the ceremonial ribbon with his ship's laser instead, completely destroying the DOOP's spaceship. Brannigan, is pegged by the lead character Leela as, "the sorriest captain I've ever seen." Also, Quote: ... He is arrogant, incompetent, chauvinistic, cocky, and painfully stupid. Brannigan believes himself to be a "ladies' man", yet he is extremely sexist and clueless in matters of romance. Soon after first meeting him, Leela has pity sex with him; this is later revealed to be his first sexual encounter. He mentions this encounter repeatedly in later episodes while remaining convinced that Leela lusts after him despite her vocal opposition to the idea. ... Brannigan is also known for mispronouncing words and for inventing words such as "sexfully". He claims to have a "very sexy" learning disability, "sexlexia". ... SOURCE - http://goo.gl/O9IyR My other choice would be the show lead, Fry (Phillip J. Frye). This would seem more apt. Fry, like the John Crichton character from Farscape, ends up being haphazardly thrust into this environment where he ends up taking on a sort of ambassadorial role between earth and ETs. More on Fry, Quote: Born in the twentieth century in New York City Fry is an average, thoroughly unremarkable loser in his 20s[3], though the episode "The Luck of the Fryrish" seems to imply he was 30 at the time of his freezing.[4] He is a pizza delivery boy who, during the first few seconds of the year 2000, fell into a cryonic tank while delivering a pizza to Applied Cryogenics. He remains frozen until the last day of the year 2999. He then meets the one-eyed career officer Leela, and a cigar-smoking, booze-fueled, kleptomaniac robot Bender. Together, they are employed by Fry's distant nephew, the senile and demented old scientist Prof. Hubert J. Farnsworth, as the crew of his delivery company Planet Express. ... Characterized as simple, sweet, naïve and immature... Despite his low intelligence, Fry is a very caring and kind-hearted person who often goes out of his way to help his friends, even if he is sometimes oblivious to their problems. He tolerates all of his friends' quirks... Despite his laziness,Fry has also exhibited remarkable bravery and self-sacrifice on occasion and has even displayed flashes of stagnant intelligence. ... In the episode "The Why of Fry", Leela's seemingly oblivious pet Nibbler reveals himself as the reason for Fry's freezing; because Fry lacks the Delta brainwave, he can withstand the intellect-draining onslaught of the evil Brainspawn, is immune to the Dark One's mind reading in Into The Wild Green Yonder, and brainslugs starve to death when attached to him. Nibbler's race, the Nibblonians, dub him "The Mighty One". Through prediction (on the eve of 1999, as the Nibblonians lack the ability to travel through time), they guessed that Fry would be the one to save the world from the evil Brainspawn; since his natural lifespan would not extend to the right millennium, however, Nibbler is sent to make the aforementioned delivery call to push an unsuspecting Fry into the cryogenic tube, to re-emerge December 31, 2999. ... SOURCE - http://goo.gl/LUknF In any event, I thought this discovery was worth sharing. On a side note, while traipsing about Youtube for this doop stuff, I might have inadvertently come across some theme music for Dupes / doops. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dIitNvPgpNE |
